Making A Fancy Gate Fold Card with Coordinating Die | Altenew Parrot Paradise

Using coordinating dies ensures that your hand made cards are looking pretty and saves a lot of your time on cutting. Using coordinating dies for gatefold cards adds the right mix of beauty and interest to your cards.

Usually I make Portrait fold cards, which are one of the most basic card folds. For me it is convenient to make two cards from a standard 8 1/2" x 11" cardstock sheet. And most of my layouts work better for Portrait folds.

Обычно я делаю вертикально сложенные открытки с одним сгибом, так называемые портретные. Из одного листа бумаги размером 8.5 на 11 дюймов у меня получается две работы. К тому же большинство композиций лучше смотрятся на прямоугольном поле.

Recently I came across the Die Cut Gatefold Card tutorial by Jennifer McGuire and wanted to use Parrot Paradise stamps and die set from ALTENEW for this type of card folds.

Недавно увидела урок Дженнифер про открытки, сложенные в виде калитки и использование вырубок, и сразу же подумала про недавно купленный набор штампов и парных ножей Parrot Paradise от компании ALTENEW.

What is a gatefold card?
- A gatefold card is a card that opens in the middle. In other words two flaps fold into the center of the card.

Gatefold cards are popular for various invitations, e.g. wedding or housewarming, when the text is placed inside a card.

Что такое открытка в виде калитки?
- Это открытка, которая открывается в центре. Другими словами створки при складывании встречаются в центре.

За рубежом подобные открытки используют для пригласительных на свадьбы и другие семейные праздники, потому что внутри размещают большой текст.

I loved Jennifer's idea to embellish the gatefold card inside and show the focal design element through a die cut opening. For my card I am using Parrot Paradise stamps and die set from ALTENEW. I bought this set from Altenew shop, and it is also available from Simon Says Stamp and Blitsy.

Я загорелась идеей Дженнифер украсить открытку внутри, но не прятать украшение, а выставить его на показ снаружи. Although I use coordinating dies often, I try to avoid too complicated die cutting techniques. This techniques is simple to try and does not require any advanced card making skills.

How To Make This Card:

• Cut a sheet of a Surf Blue cardstock to 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ and score 2 1/8″ from each end
• Pre-fold scored lines with a bone folder to have good crisp folds.
• Die cut a window in the front of the gatefold with the coordinating die to the parrot image:
• Open the card up, position the die on the left flap and run it through the die cutting machine to cut the left part of the die.
• Then close the card and insert the die into the die cut opening to align it perfectly and fix it with a temporary tape to the right flap.
• To cut the right part of the die open a card up and run it through the die cutting machine.
• To make a gatefold card front interesting stencil Deco Pattern from Hero Arts:
• Firstly, close the card, insert a piece of a scratch paper in the opening to safeguard it. Then cover the front with a stencil and ink it.
• To stamp the sentiment, open the card and stamp down Dream Big from More Than Words stamps set from ALTENEW in black ink down to the left flap.
• To add a parrot image on the inside of the card trim it with scissors down to the outline, close the card and adhere the parrot inside the die cut opening with a foam tape.

• Слегка обрежьте ножницами вырубку раскрашенного штампа попугая. Сложите открытку и посадите ровно в отверстие вырубку на вспененный скотч.

Tips for Making a Gatefold Card

• To find out where you have to score, divide your card width by 4 (eg. 6" / 4= 1 1/2") and score at 1/4 of your width (1 1/2") and 3/4 (4 1/2").
• Alter the look of a card by scoring the folds in different places, i.e. creating asymmetrical card.  
• Stencil some abstract pattern in cardstock matching ink shade to make a gatefold card front interesting. Or use Cloud Stencil from My Favorite Things.

Несколько советов про открытки-калитки:

• Для изготовления открыток-калиток можно использовать бумагу и другого размера. Чтобы вычислить расположение сгибов, разделите ширину на 4 и сделайте 1й сгиб на 1/4 ширины, а 2й - на 3/4 ширины.
• Попробуйте асимметричное складывание открытки, когда одна створка шире другой.
• Используйте трафареты с абстрактными рисунками для украшения створок или например, трафарет Облака от компании My Favorite Things.
